At Biggestleaf Travel, we want to join global efforts to strengthen carbon sinks so that the impact of carbon emissions can be reduced.
Put simply, carbon offsetting entails reducing carbon dioxide or greenhouse gas emissions to compensate for emissions generated elsewhere. Travellers can offset the carbon emissions from their flights, ground transportation and other activities by purchasing carbon credits. The proceeds from these carbon credit sales are then directed towards projects aimed at mitigating emissions such as tree planting, habitat protection and rehabilitation.
Yes. Travel contributes to carbon emissions through the release of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) from the consumption of fossil fuels during air travel, ground travel, electricity usage and waste generation, among others. They are also generated by activities such as game drives, helicopter flips, motorboating and even supply deliveries to the lodge or camp. While we can adopt more sustainable practices, reduce energy consumption and travel more efficiently, certain emissions are still unavoidable.
We see our carbon offsetting as an investment in global climate action to scale up what we can achieve alone. By partnering with Anthesis, we purchase carbon credits that they use to invest in, for example, forestry projects in countries such as Tanzania.
Anthesis was founded in 2013 and is a certified B corporation (in other words, it is a for-profit company that has been verified by the non-profit organisation B Lab to meet standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency and legal accountability).
Through Anthesis, we invest in projects that protect and restore forests and other habitats that absorb carbon, which deliver emissions reductions commensurate with the measured carbon footprints of:
We keep records of these actions that Anthesis use to calculate how much carbon we need to offset. One credit is the equivalent of one metric ton of CO2 equivalent reduced, avoided or removed.
Anthesis help us manage some of our carbon production by paying into the voluntary carbon market (VCM). This is a decentralized marketplace where private entities such as Biggestleaf Travel ‘buy carbon credits to offset greenhouse gas emissions on a purely voluntary basis.’
