Highlights

What We Love

  • Splendid 180° views over Walker Bay on the Whale Coast
  • Staying amid an ancient milkwood forest in the Cape Floral Kingdom
  • Birding, beekeeping, nature walks and seasonal whale watching

When To Visit

  • Peak Season: October to April

The flowers ‘spring’ to life after the winter rains and hot summers are ideal for outdoor or beach activities.

  • Green Season: May to September

Although this is a winter rainfall region, southern right whales arrive in Walker Bay from about July, peaking in August.

Overview

Built as a series of low-slung suites that blend into the surroundings without compromising the view, Grootbos Forest Lodge is a jewel on the Whale Coast, so named for the huge pods of southern right whales that make Walker Bay their home every August. Grootbos Private Nature Reserve encompasses a large area of a Cape Floral Kingdom, with endangered and new-to-science species found here as well as small mammals and plentiful birdlife.

Your days at Forest Reserve are enmeshed in abundant nature: visit bee hives, go on floral ‘game drive’, hike to lookout points, visit the Hannerie Wenhold Botanical Art Gallery, spot birds or saddle up your horse. Add fine dining and a superb wine cellar, and you have pure relaxation on tap.
