When To Visit

Peak Season: June to July and mid-December to mid-January
The Sardine Run and humpback whale migration both occur at midyear, making for exciting marine safaris on the warm Indian Ocean
Winter season: April to May and August to September
Before and after the sardines and humpbacks pass GweGwe is a quieter time when the cooler weather is ideal for hikers and birders

Overview

A well-kept secret, Mkambati Nature Reserve in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province is opening up to visitors of GweGwe Beach Lodge. With front-row seats to everything from the annual whale and sardine migrations to a breeding colony of Cape vultures, GweGwe is one of the few places in the world where you can see plains game against the backdrop of the Indian Ocean. This stretch of the Wild Coast is punctuated by rivers and waterfalls, all banked by lush Afromontane forest.

Each of the rooms at GweGwe has a private pool and lovely views. This is the place to for those who love the outdoors: because there are no big cats, you are safe to hike, bike, kayak, picnic and even SUP!
