Highlights
What We Love
- Listening to the night sounds while snuggled in a bed made from a reclaimed dhow
- Exploring the transition zone between Tanzania’s eastern and southern biomes
- Looking for wild dogs, honey badgers, Grant’s gazelle, red-billed hornbill and Ruaha chats
When To Visit
Peak Season: June to October
A great time for nature walks and fly-camping as the weather and bush dry up
Green Season: November to December – annual short rains March to May – annual long rains
The Jongomero and Great Ruaha Rivers swell with the rains, turning the landscape intense green and revitalizing the riverine forest around the lodge
Overview
Its soaring thatched roofs provide natural conditioning and an airy environment at Jongomero, named after a crucial river in Ruaha National Park, Tanzania’s second-largest wildlife preserve. It has sizable cheetah and wild dog populations and 570 recorded bird species.
Miombo woodland to the south and acacia savannah to the east converge here, making for an exciting overlap of species. Explore on foot or by game-drive vehicle, spotting kudu, roan, sable, bushbuck, lion, buffalo, elephant, zebra and more. If you’re really lucky, you may spot a genet in the trees above your tent – shy small cats that emerge under the safety of darkness. By day, an ellie may join you at the pool, quenching its thirst with a slurp or two!
