OVERVIEW

This is an action-packed itinerary that includes all of northern Botswana’s most famous highlights such as Chobe, Moremi and the Okavango Delta. This safari will satisfy first-timers to Botswana or travellers who like being on the go, experiencing a different environment every couple of days.

From the colossal Chobe River, which attracts enormous herds of buffalo and elephant, to the predator kingdom of Savuti and pretty floodplains of Moremi, ending right on the water of a wide lagoon in the Delta, this is holiday that takes you through Botswana with carefully selected accommodation that won’t break the bank.

Consider adding time at Victoria Falls before you kick off as it’s an easy add-on to your time in Kasane and definitely worth seeing.

THIS ITINERARY WAS DESIGNED BY JOANNE

I lived in Botswana’s safari capital – Maun – for seven years where I worked as everything from a camp manager to a travel agent. Being in the epicentre allowed me experience innumerable lodges first-hand and understand how the Okavango’s fluctuating levels affect your safari.

DAILY ITINERARY

The bustle of Kasane falls away as you are driven from the airport to Chobe Game Lodge on the banks of the Chobe River. Consider this your first game drive as you look out for the myriad wildlife that thrives here.

The lodge is right on the river, affording you views of the passing parade of hippos, crocodiles, storks and fish eagles. The water is the centrepiece to sundowner cruises and morning boat ride – a great way to start the day!

Why we love Chobe Game Lodge:

  • Slowly acclimatise to Botswana’s heat with air-conditioned suites
  • Enjoy expansive river views from the huge wooden deck
  • Take time out in the spa, fully-equipped modern gym or pool
  • One of the few lodges in Chobe National Park itself

Today you are driven back to Kasane Airport for your short flight to the Savuti Airstrip. Although it’s also in Chobe National Park, the Savuti area is very different to the Chobe Riverfront. In green season, the Savuti Marsh fills up with water, attracting predators and prey alike while high season offers classic grassland.

Your home is Savute Safari Lodge, which overlooks a popular waterhole and is near the ephemeral Savute Channel, which disappears for long stretches before mysteriously flowing again.

Why we love Savute Safari Lodge:

  • ‘Bush TV’ is provided by the resident elephants at the waterhole
  • Wallowing in the pool in the heat of the afternoon
  • Enjoying a pre-dawn coffee on your chalet’s private deck
  • Knowledgeable guides who keep tabs on Savuti’s territorial wildlife

Bidding farewell to Savute, excitement mounts as you fly into the Xakanaxa Airstrip, which has been carved out of the woodland of Moremi Game Reserve (don’t be surprised to find game on the runway!). Your guide will whisk you off to Camp Moremi, near the Xakanaxa Lagoon.

Being close to water allows you to enjoy boating and mokoro excursions in the right conditions. ‘Camp M’ is shaded by ebony trees so look up – you never know what you’ll spot in the branches…

Why we love Camp Moremi:

  • Classic thatch bush lodge with wooden walkways through the trees
  • When the flood is in, nothing beats a mokoro ride through the channels
  • Twice-daily game drives for reliable sightings of lion and leopard
  • Excellent birding right from camp – there are 550 species to be spotted

Wind down your safari the same way you started it: on a serene body of water. As you fly into the Xugana Airstrip, the Okavango’s sinuous oxbow lakes will come into view, emptying into the permanent Xugana Lagoon, one of the most beautiful places in the Delta.

Your home is Xugana Island Lodge, where you are surrounded by clear water. The lodge is the second ever built in the Delta and dates to 1974, making it a part of safari history.

Why we love Xugana Island Camp:

  • Seasonal catch-and-release angling of bream and tigerfish
  • Dinner under a candyfloss pink sunset on the floating deck
  • Motorboating to the Godikwe Heronry to see which species are nesting
  • Guided nature walks in the coolness of the early morning

Your mind at peace and your heart bursting with emotion, today you say goodbye to the team at Xugana Island Lodge. Your guide will take you to the airstrip for a final game drive and the last chance to see a Pel’s fishing owl or a shy sitatunga if they have evaded you so far.

Your flight takes you to Maun, the safari capital of Botswana. From there, think about adding two days in Makgadikgadi or Nxai Pan for something completely different.
