OVERVIEW

If you only have a limited amount of vacation time and want to use it for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, this condensed itinerary idea ticks all the boxes. Not only does it use some of Rwanda’s most reputable accommodation but it also places you at the heart of mind-blowing Volcanoes National Park for excellent gorilla trekking. Even better, instead of rushing from place to place, you will have three nights in the park, even to sample all it and the lodge have to offer.

Kicking off in Kigali – a well-organised capital city that is full of surprises – you are driven by your expert guide to the park, giving you time to absorb the landscape, scenery and everyday village life.

THIS ITINERARY WAS DESIGNED BY JOANNE

If you’ve always wanted to see the gorillas, just go for it! It’s as amazing as they say and I enjoyed every second of my precious hour with them. I’ve also visited Akagera, which is lush and beautiful, and where the game is making an extraordinary comeback.

DAILY ITINERARY

It is always a welcome sight to see your driver-guide waiting for you at the airport. Leaving Kigali International, you are escorted to your first overnight stop: The Retreat. A stylish and streamlined boutique hotel, it has everything you need to settle into Rwanda.

If your schedule allows, it is worth exploring Kigali. The Genocide Memorial is thought-provoking and informative, and the traditional markets and contemporary art galleries hold much fascination. Twitchers can get cracking with time at the bird sanctuary.

Why we love The Retreat:

  • A home-from-home feeling
  • Attention to detail in the design
  • Swimming pool to cool off in
  • Gym and spa for relaxation

Sometimes it is fun to just sit back – exactly what you will be doing today as you are driven to Volcanoes National Park, the gorilla-trekking capital of the world. Your lodge for three nights is Sabyinyo Silverback, named after a famous volcanic peak and the gorilla alpha male.

In addition to searching out families of mountain gorillas, you will go on a separate trek to find golden monkeys. Although smaller than gorillas, they live in larger groups and can be amusingly acrobatic.

Why we love Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge:

  • A true community-owned lodge
  • Convenient boot-cleaning service
  • In-room massages after trekking
  • Cosy fireplaces to ward off the chill

It’s hard to believe that in just a few days you could have made so many wonderful memories: from sampling fresh Rwandan tea to sharing a glance with a gorilla, being awed by the tree canopy or charmed by a gorilla baby…

Whatever you’ve experienced, there’s time to reflect on your time in Rwanda on the drive back to Kigali today. A beach break can easily be arranged on the Kenyan or Tanzanian coastlines if you need time to unwind.
