DAY 1+
It is always a welcome sight to see your driver-guide waiting for you at the airport. Leaving Kigali International, you are escorted to your first overnight stop: The Retreat. A stylish and streamlined boutique hotel, it has everything you need to settle into Rwanda. If your schedule allows, it is worth exploring Kigali. The Genocide Memorial is thought-provoking and informative, and the traditional markets and contemporary art galleries hold much fascination. DAYS 2 TO 4+
Sometimes it is fun to just sit back – exactly what you will be doing today as you are driven to Volcanoes National Park, the gorilla-trekking capital of the world. Your lodge for three nights is Sabyinyo Silverback, named after a famous volcanic peak and the gorilla alpha male. In addition to searching out families of mountain gorillas, you will go on a separate trek to find golden monkeys. Although smaller than gorillas, they live in larger groups and can be amusingly acrobatic. DAY 5+
It’s hard to believe that in just a few days you could have made so many wonderful memories: from sampling fresh Rwandan tea to sharing a glance with a gorilla, being awed by the tree canopy or charmed by a gorilla baby… Whatever you’ve experienced, there’s time to reflect on your time in Rwanda on the drive back to Kigali today. A beach break can easily be arranged on the Kenyan or Tanzanian coastlines if you need time to unwind.
