OVERVIEW

There are few places in the world where you can truly ‘escape’ from modern life and this short itinerary includes two of them. Starting in the vibrant coastal port of Dar es Salaam, wing your way to the small but dynamite Katavai National Park, home to the largest herds of buffalo in the world. Your lodge is truly off the grid and it’s not unusual to have elephant passing through camp.

After getting your safari fill, retrace your steps for a beach break at Lazy Lagoon – never has there been a more apposite name! Set on a private island in the warm Indian Ocean, you’ll always just steps from the sand and seconds from swimming, snorkelling, boating – or doing nothing at all…

THIS ITINERARY WAS DESIGNED BY ANGELA

My love of Tanzania started with a spontaneous trip to Zanzibar where I was thrilled by the history, culture, beaches and unmistakably spiced air. Next I scaled Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest point and the world’s largest free-standing mountain. The south is under-explored and I’ve been lucky enough to travel through Ruaha and Nyerere, and do conservation work in the Usanga wetlands. The ultimate Tanzanian bucket-list item is definitely trekking chimpanzees on Rubondu Island!

DAILY ITINERARY

Thanks to its importance as an Indian Ocean port, Dar es Salaam is one of Tanzania’s biggest cities, complete with modern skyscrapers and historic buildings dating to the mid-1800s. After landing at Julius Nyerere International Airport, your driver guide will take you on a short city tour en route to Hotel Slipway on the beautiful Msasani peninsula.
An overnight stay helps you relax into the slower Tanzanian pace of life so you are all set for an action-packed safari.

Why we love Hotel Slipway:

  • Very popular historic hotel on the bay
  • In a precinct with shops, bars and restaurants
  • Ocean views from some rooms
  • Adjoins an authentic local craft market

Katavi proves the adage that size isn’t everything. Although a small park by African standards, it has a wide variety of habitats including grasslands, woodlands and seasonal floodplains. These are heaving with plains game and, of course, the predators that stalk them…

Taking off from Dar es Salaam, you’ll ultimately land at Kipili Airstrip, where you will be met by staff from Katavi Wildlife Camp. As the name suggestions, the focus is on the wildlife that you have three full days to discover.

Why we love Katavi Wildlife Camp:

  • Uninterrupted vistas across Katisunga plain
  • No Wi-Fi and limited power for a digital detox
  • Back to old-fashioned safari camp nostalgia
  • Just six trees shaded by mature trees

By now you’ll be enjoying the serenity that comes with unplugging from 21st century life. The good news is that you can maintain the tranquillity for three more nights on a private island.
After retracing your steps to Dar, a short drive takes you to Bagamoyo. From there, a boat ride delivers you to Lazy Lagoon, where you wade ashore to a welcoming drink. Choose to do as much or as little as you like with plenty of non-motorised water sports on offer.

Why we love Lazy Lagoon:

  • Located on a private island off the Swahili coast
  • Chance to see small wildlife like genet, suni and bushbabies
  • Fresh fish straight off traditional ngalawas
  • Sun-splashed swimming pool and rooms on the beach
