It’s a classic irony of Africa that the best views of Mount Kilimanjaro – the continent’s highest peak that is found in Tanzania – are actually in neighbouring Kenya! And there’s little doubt that, of those views, among the clearest are from Tortilis Camp.

Located in the Kitirua private conservancy that runs from Amboseli National Park to the Tanzanian border, Tortilis has a lovely position on a hillock. Its traditional makuti thatch roofs keep rooms cool and the large swimming pool beckons at siesta time. Amboseli is known for large herds of elephants but everything from shy bat-eared foxes to non-migratory wildebeest are found here. Tortilis’s fertile soil supports an impressive kitchen garden: those salad leaves on your plate were literally ‘just picked’.
