OVERVIEW

Cape Town in South Africa is one of the best cities on the continent to get a rental car and hit the open road. This is because infrastructure is generally good and many drives between destinations – like Table Mountain, Cape Point and the Cape Winelands – are incredibly scenic. Add time in a premier Big 5 game reserve, and you have a trip that is ideal for first-timers, families and those who want a personalised schedule.

Your first stop is Cape Town for four nights before you head to the Winelands for two evenings. This itinerary rounds out with three nights at Welgevonden Game Reserve. You could also start with your safari and end in the Mother City, especially if you like to shop!

THIS ITINERARY WAS DESIGNED BY SABRINA

Fortunate enough to call South Africa my home, I have been blessed with countless opportunities to explore this magnificent country. From the majestic peaks of Table Mountain in the Mother City, the famous vineyards of the Cape Winelands to the untamed wilderness of Kruger National Park and the endless beaches and tropical weather of Kwazulu Natal, I have had the privilege of immersing myself in South Africa’s diverse landscapes.

DAILY ITINERARY

It’s not long on the drive from Cape Town International Airport to your accommodation for the next four nights before Table Mountain comes into view. This landmark cradles the city and will help you navigate as you explore this vibrant, diverse and energising region.

After checking into More Quarters Neighbourhood Hotel, you have the freedom to visit the V&A Waterfront, Robben Island, Camps Bay beach, Lion’s Head, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and so many other exciting places.

Why we love More Quarters Neighbourhood Hotel:

  • Mini-apartments in a historic neighbourhood
  • Easy walks to several restaurants, bars, shops and galleries
  • Independent holidays in the heart of Cape Town
  • Friendly staff who will help with any requests

Today you venture a little further out and drive to the start of the world-famous Cape Winelands. Some estates here date to the 1700s and produce award-winning wines. Your bed for two nights is at the Spier Hotel, which also has restaurants, cellars, art and conservation projects on the grounds.

Choose between visiting estates that are ultra-modern, historic, black-owned, organic and more – the options are endless. Some of South Africa’s top eateries and golf courses are also found here.

Why we love Spier Hotel:

  • With striking distance of Cape Town, wine estates and the airport
  • Plenty to do on the grounds for children and adults alike
  • Lots of accommodation options set amid mature trees and private courtyards
  • Very comfortable rooms with everything you need

After checking out of Spier Hotel, you take a final drive back to Cape Town International Airport, the vineyards receding behind you as Table Mountain once again appears in the distance. If your flight to OR Tambo International Airport is early enough, you may be able to drive to Welgevonden Game Reserve in time for the afternoon game drive and sundowners.

Your guide will find as many animals as possible as you sit back and enjoy the fresh air of the African bush.

Why we love Tintswalo Family Camp:

  • Set in the productive western sector of Welgevonden
  • Overlooks a waterhole that is a favourite of game
  • Babysitting service to mind younger children
  • Certified kosher kitchen and meals available

As you bid the staff at Tintswalo Family Camp goodbye and pick up your rental car for the drive back to Johannesburg and your onward arrangements, you can reminisce about all you’ve seen and done over the past nine days. Perhaps you took the ferry to infamous Robben Island, watched wild dogs on the hunt or contemplated a beautiful sunrise. Whatever it was, no doubt you wish you could turn the car around and do it all over again!
