CONSERVATION & COMMUNITY
Conservation
The reserve has solar-powered waterholes, extensive anti-poaching operations (including a wide radio communications network and funding for vehicle support). The APU team collects snares and nets to minimise poaching while also conducting annual controlled burns to stimulate vegetation growth.
Sustainability
Much of the new lodge was built by reusing and repurposing materials from the previous buildings on the property. Matetsi uses solar power and has a Natura water-bottling plant with reusable, recycled glass bottles. There is also a vegetable garden and a recycling scheme with an emphasis on reducing plastic waste.
Community
Matetsi works with the GRACE Foundation in Northern Matabeleland and with Pack for a Purpose. The lodge also provides scholarships and local employment: 60% of staff come from the immediate area and the rest from wider Zimbabwe.
OVERVIEW
Away from the hustle and bustle of the Victoria Falls is Matetsi, a modern bush lodge that lies in over 55 000 hectares / 136 000 acres of rewilded land. Painstakingly brought back to life and home to four of the Big 5, today is has 14 kilometres / nine miles of private frontage on the Zambezi, allowing for serene boating without the crowds.
Back on land, the lodge comprises 2-bedroom family suites and a 4-bedroom villa, each with welcome touches like air conditioning, Wi-Fi and even Bluetooth speakers. All look out onto the water, giving you a glorious view of chortling hippos and breeding herds of elephants crossing from shore to shore. Matetsi is perfect for extending your safari while also seeing the Victoria Falls.
