CONSERVATION & COMMUNITY
Cheetah conservation and monitoring
This area was closed for 20 years to allow the cheetah population to recover. Other predators, like lions and leopards, also benefited from this closure
OVERVIEW
There aren’t many shrubs or trees here thanks to the hard calcrete layer that allows the grasslands to flourish. It is exactly this classic savannah that attracts the wildebeest during their Migration and provides the perfect flat, open hunting grounds that cheetah love.
Another benefit is that the walls of Namiri Plains are built from the calcrete, giving them excellent temperature control and earthy tones that make for an elegant, understated camp. The permanent underground water keeps herbivores in the area and extended game drives with delicious picnic lunches can mean phenomenal sightings. The tents are sanctuaries of taupe and neutral tones, and their wide decks and alfresco tubs allow for game viewing to continue long after you’ve alighted from the vehicle.
