OVERVIEW

Three of Zambia’s heaviest hitters make up this comprehensive itinerary that could include everything from kayaking with elephants and spotting hundreds of bird species to game drives in a truly remote destination and being awed by the world’s largest sheet of falling water. Add cultural tours, nature walks and seasonal catch-and-release fishing and you have the rare journey that truly has something for everyone.

You begin in beautiful South Luangwa National Park, fed by the Zambezi River that comes down the Victoria Falls. Then you overnight in Lusaka, a growing metropolis and the country’s capital. From urban to wilderness is your next move as you fly into remote Kafue National Park. The finale is time near the unforgettable Victoria Falls.

THIS ITINERARY WAS DESIGNED BY JOANNE

One of the few places that offers a true walking safari – between camps – rather than just a simple nature walk. I love Zambia because it is still very authentic: up on the Busanga Plains in Kafue, you’ll have a true picture of Africa at its most pristine and untouched.

DAILY ITINERARY

After you touch down at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, you will be assisted with check-in for your light aircraft flight to Jeki Airstrip in Lower Zambezi National Park. Watch as the city limits give way to endless pristine bush with very few roads or villages.

‘Home’ is Sausage Tree Camp, right on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River. Meet your dedicated private guide and kick off your Zambian safari in style!

Why we love Sausage Tree Camp:

  • Private plunge pools parallel to the Zambezi River
  • Kayaking up the Zambezi’s channels
  • A guaranteed private guide for your stay
  • Long lap pool for working off the sundowners!

Your guide gives you a last game drive through South Luangwa this morning as they take you back to Jeki Airstrip for your return flight to Lusaka. From the air you will now appreciate how the river runs and how the area’s topography – such as the escarpment – explains why certain species like giraffes aren’t found here.

In Lusaka, you overnight at Latitude 15°, a funky boutique hotel with all the mod cons that’s perfect as a ‘breather’ before your next steps.

Why we love Latitude 15°:

  • Very unusual décor commissioned by Zambian artists
  • Fully equipped gym with a heated lap pool
  • Pretty spa with a full range of treatments
  • Delicious African fusion menu at the in-house restaurant

The flight from Lusaka comes down at Plains Airstrip, giving you your first glimpse of Kafue National Park and its prolific game. One of the wildest, most remote and least visited parks in the country, it offers experienced safari goers enormous potential.

Shuma Camp is on the eponymous Busanga Plains, known as the Plains of Plenty because the fertile soil supports thousands of grazers – and their predators. Night drives and seasonal boating reveal all parts of this animal paradise to you.

Why we love Shumba Camp:

  • Lies on a private island in northern Kafue
  • Arguably the most luxurious camp in the region
  • Elevated rooms for views over the plains
  • Swimming pool for the afternoon heat

Soaring above Kafue, you’re soon touching down at Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport in Livingstone, named after the first Englishman to see the Victoria Falls. A driver whisks you to Royal Chundu, a beautiful lodge amid the dense riverine forest of the Zambezi.

After plenty of early morning wake-up calls, you may want a slower pace of sightseeing at the Falls, river cruises, island walks or canoeing. A must-do is the daily afternoon sundowner cruise under a pink African sunset…

Why we love Royal Chundu River Lodge:

  • On-site helipad for flips to the Victoria Falls
  • Late afternoon sundowner cruises
  • A television room and kids’ club
  • Lovely décor with decks that open onto the river

After 11 days of exciting game viewing, adventurous activities and extra-special Zambian hospitality, your African holiday comes to an end. Take time to savour breakfast on the deck, listening to hippos and the call of a fish eagle.

When it is time to go, your driver returns you to the airport in bustling Livingstone for your onward flight. Extensions to other safari destinations like the Kruger National Park or Cape Town in South Africa can easily be arranged for you.
