OVERVIEW

Short but very sweet – just like your time with the gorillas! As a quick getaway or an ‘add-on’ gorilla-trekking expedition to another safari, this itinerary keeps it simple to deliver great experiences and maximum relaxation. If you have limited vacation time and a clear goal to see mountain gorillas while maximising pampering and superb service, then this is the ideal option.

Like almost all Rwanda holidays, you fly into the capital of Kigali for an overnight stay. Because it is a small country, you can leave light aircraft behind and instead be driven to your next destination – the unparalleled Volcanoes National Park. This is a wonderful way to see more of the landscape and understand the everyday lives of ordinary Rwandans.

THIS ITINERARY WAS DESIGNED BY JOANNE

If you’ve always wanted to see the gorillas, just go for it! It’s as amazing as they say and I enjoyed every second of my precious hour with them. I’ve also visited Akagera, which is lush and beautiful, and where the game is making an extraordinary comeback.

DAILY ITINERARY

After you jet into Kigali International Airport, your driver-guide will be waiting to take you to your overnight accommodation, the Kigali Marriott. Set in the burgeoning financial district, it is a sleek hotel with all the mod cons you would expect to find.

Depending on your schedule, you may be able to visit the one-of-a-kind Kigali Genocide Memorial that commemorates life and new beginnings. The old town, traditional markets, art galleries and the bird sanctuary are all also worth a visit.

Why we love Kigali Marriott Hotel:

  • Spacious rooms for every type of traveller
  • Convenient location in downtown
  • Swimming pool, gym and spa on site
  • Take meals on the terrace and enjoy the views

After a hopefully blissful night’s sleep, it’s time to up the ante: today you are driven to the world’s greatest stronghold of mountain gorillas. Volcanoes National Park is your playground, and you will go on separate treks to find them and troupes of golden monkeys.

Home for three nights is Kwitonda Lodge, which is dedicated to guest wellness and maximising your overall trekking experience. In addition, you can do mountain biking, visit nearby villages and sample vintages from the cellar.

Why we love Kwitonda Lodge:

  • All rooms have private heated plunge pools
  • Snuggle up next to indoor and outdoor fireplaces
  • Conservation and technical gear rooms for trekkers
  • On-site nursery for reforestation and fresh produce

Short, sweet and satisfying. Such is the power of fresh air, untrammelled nature and excellent hospitality that, in just a few days, you can return to Kigali refreshed, revitalised and rejuvenated.

They say gorilla trekking is one of the most profound safari experiences you can have as you see first-hand just how familiar gorillas’ expressions and gestures are. As you are driven back to the city today, we hope you reflect on the powerful moments you have had.
