OVERVIEW

If Namibia has always been on your bucket list but you’ve never been sure where to start or what to expect, this itinerary is perfect for first-timers who want all the ‘greatest hits’ in premier accommodation. It has a finely tuned balance between being active and relaxed, and combines road and air transfers to not only save time but also give you a taste of the ancient landscape.

Your safari begins immediately with time at Sossusvlei Private Desert Reserve instead of Windhoek. Then you fly via light aircraft to Damaraland and onto another private reserve adjacent to the great Etosha National Park. The emphasis is very much on outstanding wildlife and nature encounters with access to exclusive waterholes and hides.

THIS ITINERARY WAS DESIGNED BY JOANNE

The diverse landscapes – from far-reaching dunes and beaches to pans and rivers – are so incredibly appealing to me as they are remote and you can truly lose yourself in a moment in time. I also love the rich culture: you can still find nomadic families in the far-flung Kunene region that live by their age-old beliefs.

DAILY ITINERARY

This itinerary wastes no time in getting you started on your Namibia safari. After landing at Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek, the capital, you are immediately escorted to the light aircraft that will fly you down to Sossusvlei Airstrip and Sossusvlei Desert Lodge.

Lying in its own reserve, the lodge gives you access to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei on a day-trip while also allowing you to explore this interesting slice of dunes and mountains dominated by herds of scimitar-horned oryx.

Why we love Sossusvlei Desert Lodge:

  • Resident astronomer with a high-tech telescope
  • Carefully curated cellar with top wines
  • Use of Swarovski binoculars for your stay
  • Scenic helicopter or hot-air balloon flights

After two days, you should feel much more relaxed. The good news is that even more downtime is to come. A light air transfer wings you from Sossusvlei to Onduli Airstrip, where your guide will be waiting to welcome you to the sights and sounds of Damaraland.

Your open-air suite at Onduli Ridge lets nature in. Your three-day stay lets you explore Twyfelfontein while also going on game drives to track desert-adapted elephant and black rhino and see fascinating rock art.

Why we love Onduli Ridge:

  • Views of Brandberg, Namibia’s highest mountain
  • Built among Damaraland’s iconic boulders
  • Every room has a roll-out starbed
  • Use of Swarovski binoculars for your stay

Sit back and take it all in: today’s transfer is by road to Ongava Private Reserve in Greater Etosha. The hub of many research projects to preserve the area’s fragile and unique biodiversity, it prides itself on putting nature first.

Anderssons is named after an intrepid explorer of Etosha and has been designed with rounded ceilings and plenty of natural materials. The infinity-edge pool overlooks the productive waterhole so you can game watch on hot afternoons with an iced drink to hand!

Why we love Anderssons at Ongava:

  • Visit the inspiring Ongava Research Centre
  • Get the shot at the photographic hide
  • Approach shy rhino with your guide
  • Shared boundary with Etosha National Park

After three nights at Anderssons, it might be hard to tear yourself away and start your journey back to the city. Fortunately, the drive allows for a gentle acclimatisation with wilderness areas gradually giving way to neat suburbs and the city centre itself.

Your last night in Namibia is spent at an international hotel with everything you need for a smooth trip home. The Hilton Windhoek has room service and satellite television, which may be welcome after a week on safari.

Why we love the Hilton Windhoek:

  • Glamorous rooftop bar and swimming pool
  • Within walking distance to museums and markets
  • Onsite spa and fitness centre for working out
  • Several convenient restaurants and bars

It’s back to where your phenomenal journey began with a drive to Hosea Kutako. If you have the morning free, you may want to go for spa treatment or head to the gym before your long-haul flight. Alternatively, you may have time to go shopping or explore the Independence Museum or Nationalgalerie von Namibia to see a cultural side of the country.

They say Namibia’s peace and quiet is addictive and, before you leave, you might be thinking of coming back!
