TRAVEL ADVICE

We’ve put together all the information you need to prepare for your trip to Botswana

WHY VISIT MAURITIUS

The best safaris are all about waking before dawn to be out at first light and long nights around the campfire, finding constellations in the stars. Coupled with long-haul flights, this can be relaxing but tiring. Many of our clients enjoy a few lazy days without a pre-dawn wake-up call before flying home and Mauritius is the perfect place for that. It is easily accessible with direct flights from Southern and East Africa, two major safari destinations. Then there are usually direct flights back to the UK, Europe, Asia and Australia, making it a logistically easy roundtrip.

Besides the convenience of easy routing and fully inclusive beach resorts that cater to everyone from honeymooners to young children, Mauritius is also fun, beautiful, lively and affordable. There is great snorkelling, golf, hiking and all sorts of resort activities like horse riding and kitesurfing. Its powdery beaches stretch for 150km / 100mi and sparkling azure lagoons are protected by the world’s third-largest coral reef.

The Aapravasi Ghat and Le Morne Cultural Landscape are official UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Head to spots like Flic en Flak, Tamarin Bay, Belle Ombre and Blue Bay for gorgeous views and warm water. Birders should look out for three endemics – echo parakeets, Mauritius kestrels and pink pigeons – while everyone will enjoy watching the antics of Mauritian flying foxes, gigantic megabats that eat fruit at night. Expect an unusual mix of French, Hindu, British and even Chinese cultural influences.

MEET JOANNE OUR MAURITIUS EXPERT

Joanne has helped countless clients extend their bush safaris with stays on Africa’s exquisite Indian Ocean beaches. Mauritius is a perfect holiday destination for her family as there is plenty for everyone to see and do – whether it is lazing by the pool with a good book or being energised by every activity the resort has to offer (ideal for tiring younger kids out!). The water is always a very comfortable temperature and the whole island is highly geared for international travellers.

OUR FAVOURITE MAURITIUS DESTINATIONS

THE NORTH

The north of the island is the epicentre of restaurants, bars, clubs, galleries and boutiques. Here, the hum of Port Louis can be felt with great shopping and eating out at the Caudan Waterfront and in Chinatown. Get your dose of culture and history with trips to the Aapravasi Ghat, Hindu temples, Albion lighthouse, Pamplemousses Botanic Garden and old mansions and churches. There’s rum tasting to be had on the sugar plantations while Grand Baie beach offers top resorts and plenty of water sports.

THE SOUTH

In contrast to the cosmopolitan north, the south of Mauritius is all about nature. Take time to explore Ile aux Aigrettes National Park, Blue Bay Marine Park and Grand Bassin (also known as Ganga Talao lake, home to large Hindu sculptures). Belle Ombre beach is one of the most famous, with picture-perfect palms. Look out for brightly coloured ornate day geckos.

THE EAST

The best for early birds who want to catch the sunrise over the Indian Ocean, the east is known for Ile aux Cerf, a private island with crystal-clear water and a premium golf course. Spend the day at Bras D’Eau National Park and Belle Mare beach or hike to Eau Bleue waterfall and Lion Mountain. Le Vallee de Ferney is a nature reserve in the Bambou mountains.

THE WEST

Wonderful for sunsets, the west’s dominant feature is Le Morne Brabant, a peninsula with a massive basalt outcrop that rises from the surrounding coastal forest. Just offshore from Le Morne is an ‘aerial waterfall’ – an optical illusion only visible in special conditions from a light seaplane. The Black River Gorges National Park protects a large tract of the island’s original rainforest. Chamarel is home to not only a lovely waterfall but also the Seven-Coloured Earth, a stretch of dunes of different coloured sands.
